Spring Leadership Seminar

Friday, March 22, 2013
9:00 AM until 3:15 PM

NCCTM Spring Leadership Seminar
Koury Convention Center, Guilford Ballroom B
Greensboro, NC

Keynote Speaker: Dr. Steven Leinwand

Keynote Title: The Common Core State Standards for Mathematics: Hopes, Fears and Challenges as We Enter the Brave New World

Keynote Description: There is little question that the new Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (and the PARCC and Smarter Balanced assessments) represent a long-overdue brave new world for mathematics in the United States. We’ll take a quick look at the elements and changes represented by these new standards and then turn to their implications for teaching and testing and why we have good reason to be cautiously optimistic about a far more rational approach to mathematics.

Dr. Steven Leinwand is currently a Principal Research Analyst at the American Institutes for Research in Washington, D.C. where he serves as a mathematics expert on a wide range of projects that evaluate programs, develop assessments, and provide technical assistance. He spent twenty-two years as a K-12 Mathematics Consultant in the Connecticut Department of Education, is a former president of the National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics, and served on the NCTM Board of Directors. Dr. Leinwand’s most recently published books are Sensible Mathematics: A Guide for School Leaders in the Era of Common Core Standards and Accessible Mathematics: Ten Instructional Shifts That Raise Student Achievement.

Break-Out Sessions: There will be two rounds of four afternoon break-out sessions each (K-2, 3-5, 6-8, 9-12). Each of these sessions will be led by a team of discussion leaders including Pam Zelando, Ruth Burgin, Windy Taylor, Marta Garcia, Becky Oldham, Karen McPherson, Nikki Costello, Kitty Rutherford, Johannah Manor, Michael Gallagher, and others.Click here for Spring Leadership Seminar details.
